Arapahoe Environmental  and Sustainability Teams

The Environment

"A host of independent observations of meteorological and hydrological variables and records of extreme weather events indicate that climate change is a reality.”  - Press Release, World Meteorological Organization (2003)   See here for more on how climate change is underway.

The Environmental Team's primary focus is on climate change and its affect on the environment.  We are working to educate ourselves on the many issues that face this crisis and are determined to find solutions that both are good to our environment and promote renewable energy sources.  We believe that energy conservation is the best way to reduce our energy consumption and are looking for ways to improve this in our own daily lives and in the workings of our communities.

Sustainability

Striving to think globally but acting locally, below are some events in the Denver-Metro area focused on issues relating to Sustainability.  The events occur in March and April and are an opportunity to participate and learn and enjoy!

There are dozens of Colorado groups dedicated to making our Planet Earth healthy once again.

The ACT Sustainability Group will introduce you to local groups working towards a sustainable life style from time to time. CRES (Colorado Renewable Energy Society) is such an institution.  CRES is a recognized leader in the area of renewable energy, on of the hallmarks of sustainability.  Google CRES to get into their web site.  You'll find details on their monthly meetings, job information, technology updates, relevant links and way to take action.

CRES will be participating in the events listed below along with many other institutions.

Some of the events could even become action items for ACT!

Windsource” program by Xcel Energy
www.xcelenergy.com
Xcel Energy customers can purchase wind-generated electricity in blocks of 100 kWh or 100% wind energy. This is a way to purchase clean wind generated electricity for a small additional monthly charge. Windsource electricity is produced without air emissions such as carbon dioxide. In addition, no water is used to produce wind-generated electricity. Supporting renewable energy helps to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and preserve our natural resources for the future. Based on EPA Power Profiler statistics, buying one 100 kWh block of “Windsource” for a year has the following environmental benefits: Carbon dioxide avoided: 2,443 lbs. CO2; Miles not driven: 2,400; Trees planted: 1/3 acres

Earth Justice
Earth Justice
Founded in 1971 as the Legal Defense Fund for Sierra Club. Changed name in 1997; "the Earth needs a good lawyer." When govt agencies or private interests violate our nation's environmental laws, Earthjustice attorneys go to court to ensure that our laws are obeyed and enforced. The Nature Conservancy. Protecting Nature. Preserving Life.
Adopt an Acre
The mission of The Nature Conservancy is to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represetn the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.

Find out more about their "Adopt an Acre" program - $50 to adopt 1 acre in Costa Rica, Australia, Africa, or several locations in USA. This program provides funds for the permanent protection of some of the Earth’s last great places.

Plant a Billion Trees. One dollar. One tree. One planet.
PlantABillion.org
The Nature Conservancy is working with local partners to bring the Atlantic Forest back from the brink - restoring 2.5 million acres of land and planting 1 billion trees over the next seven years. Tropical forests like this one play a particularly special role in the fight to end global climate change. This reforestation effort will also remove 10 million tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere every year - like taking 2 million cars off the road.

At just a dollar a tree, there has never been a conservation project of this scale that's ever been so within the world's reach. Please plant a tree today and help us ensure even more lasting results for the Earth's last great places.

President Obama's stimulus plan set aside billions for clean energy. Funding will go to some familiar projects – like wind and solar power – and to some not so familiar ones, like the smart grid. So what is the smart grid? And how will it affect your home energy use?

Frontline: Poisoned Waters
pbs.org
More than three decades after the Clean Water Act, two iconic waterways—the great coastal estuaries Puget Sound and the Chesapeake Bay—are in perilous condition. With polluted runoff still flowing in from industry, agriculture, and massive suburban development, scientists fear contamination to the food chain and drinking water for millions of people. A growing list of endangered species is also threatened in both estuaries. As a new president, Congress, and states set new agendas and spending priorities, FRONTLINE correspondent Hedrick Smith examines the rising hazards to human health and the ecosystem, and why it’s so hard to keep our waters clean.

Climate Change in Australia

In 2007 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released their fourth assessment report, concluding that:

  • Warming of the climate system is unequivocal
  • Humans are very likely to be causing most of the warming that has been experienced since 1950
  • It is very likely that changes in the global climate system will continue well into the future, and that they will be larger than those seen in the recent past.

These changes have the potential to have a major impact on human and natural systems throughout the world including Australia.
