Letters to the Editor
One way to more effective on getting the word out on what our values are, is to send letters to the editor. Here are a few rules to help get your letter published.
- Be concise. The first rule is to keep it short and simple. Most newspapers have a limit on the number of words they will print in the available space.
- Make the letter personal. Tell your side of the story in a polite, firm way.
- Respond quickly. Make sure the issue is timely. Respond immediately if you are commenting on an article seen in the paper.
- Demonstrate local relevance. Write about local issues, using local statistics and facts if needed.
- Include your contact information. Always include your real name, address and contact information (phone number, email). Don't forget to include your credentials if you have any expertise in the are you are writing about.
Consider writing op-ed pieces and submitting them to the various newspapers listed here. Op-ed pieces are guest commentary opinion pieces submitted by the public. They don't have as strict a limit on the number of words as an editorial piece has - so you can state your case better.
